Carlton Lawrence: born May 29,1876 in Enosburg Falls. His father immigrated from Canada. He graduated from Kimball Union Academy and Dartmouth College. He was a Civil Engineer. 

1916-1919 he served for the Canadian Expeditiary Forces and was wounded twice overseas duty WW1. Returned home and was made a Colonel in the Vermont State Guard. 

WWII he was an executive officer in the 1st Battalion and was a former Commander of Company B, 172nd Infantry in the Vermont National Guard. 4/24/16-2/24/1919. 

 

He was the Vermont State Highway Commissioner for 28 years, retiring in 1947. 

Some of his positions:

Board of Trustees for Ludlow and significant in building the Town Hall.

Mason, VT Society of Engineers, Football Coach for Kimball Union and Supertendant of schools for Reading for a short time. Charter member of the Ludlow Rotary Club.

He was instrumental in getting the Armory build in Ludlow and the High School that sits above the Armory on the hill. 

He was an architect and supervisor in the construction of many public buildings throughout the state of Vermont.

He died 7/31/1956 from Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease and is buried at the Village Cemetery in Ludlow.
