Fred B. Thomas born Stowe, Vt. June 6, 1869 Educated at the People's Academy, Morrisville and in 1895 gradauted from Norwich University. He studied Law with George Wing of Montpelier until 1926 when he relocated to Randolph. 

He was States Attorney for Orange and Washington Counties.

He was a Probate Judge until he retired from ill health.

He was Vermont State Commissioner for taxes under Governors Hartness and Proctor. 

Many years a Trustee of Norwich University. 1951 he was awarded honorary degree of Doctor of Law.

Spanish American War: Enlisted July 22, 1898-10/27/1898 1st Vermont Volunteers Infantry. 1916 in the Mexican campaign. 

WW1:Entered Federal service April 2, 1917; Overseas Sept 29, 1918-March 30, 1919; Discharge May 9, 1919: He Commanded the  1st Vermont Infantry (57th Pioneers)and later the 337th US Infantry Division in France. Colonel on retirement.

 

Charter member and first  Montpelier Post #3 Commander

1924-25 Department Commander, he was elected unanimously from the halls of the Legion, the news reports state the veterans were excited to elect Colonel Thomas, a friend to all veterans. He spoke all over the state of Vermont encouraging veterans to join the ranks, letting them know The American Legion will grow and this is a way for veterans to be known for their service of the past and the service for their veterans, orphans and families. He cared deeply about caring for those orphans that needed a home with love, after their fathers died in service of their country. 

Died age 84, 9/5/1955 and is buried at the Morristown Corners Cemetery

 

Memberships include: Military Order of Foreign Wars, American Bar Association, Odd Fellows, The Grange where he was a Master, Randolph Rotary Club, Randolph University Cub, Randolph Christian Brotherhood.
