John Francis Sullivan of St. Albans, Vt Born November 11, 1888.

 

Served in the Spanish-American war and the Mexican border in 1916 and WWI. Captain in the Infantry served with the 5th Division in France. 3/25/1917 Co B, 1st Vt Infantry 5/16/1917; Co C 1st Vt Inf; 40th Division, 157th Infantry.  He served overseas 9/27/1918-4/11/1919. Discharged 5/14/1919. 

 

He was a Charter member of Post #1 and the Second Department Commander of Vermont.

1922 He was the National Executive Committeeman for Vermont and a Past National Vice Commander. He attended the Paris Caucas in 1919. 

 

He fought for his WWI veterans to change legislature to provide an increase in their compensation packages. Most men recieved $60.00 when they arrived home. He stated "that is a drop in the bucket; that the boys were not putting a price on their patriotism, but that they were merely requesting a little of that which they were deprived of by giving their service to the country, while other stay at homes made big money". He fought for work, training and economic recovery for those young men that returned home and had given their comfortable lives for peace at home. 

 

John Sullivan was the Mayor of St. Albans 5 terms. Also a conductor on the Central Vermont Railway (1910). He had to work for the Railway, because the Mayor of St Albans was not a paying job. So, he worked the rails in the day time and the Town office at night and the weekends. He was frugal with City funds and wa seconomically reponsible to the City. 

 

He was active with Green Mountain Post #1 and the St Albans Elks and the Knights of Columbus. 

 

He died May 5, 1949 Acute Cardiac Dilation. Buried in St. Albans Holy Cross Cemetery.
