HOWARD HILL REID (1889-1963), Norwich class of ’12, sixth commander (1924), was in the Naval Coast Defense Reserve.  He was appointed Lieutenant J.G., Provisional, on 30 November 1917.  He was stationed at the 5th Naval District until 12 March 1918, the Naval Prison at Parris Island, South Carolina, to 19 September 1918, Rec. Sh. New York to 7 October 1918 and the USS Missouri[1] to 11 November 1918.  Inactive duty included service at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia.  He was a dentist in Barre for many years, and is buried in Subsection 1, Elmwood Cemetery. 

 


[1] Not to be confused with the WW II ship of the same name; this ship was a Maine class battleship launched in 1901 and was part of the “Great White Fleet” that circumnavigated the world in 1907-1909.  It was decommissioned in 1910 but brought back into service during WW I as a training ship for the expanding Navy.
