Cdr. Alexander D. STRAITON

ALEXANDER DUNCAN STRAITON (1891-1955), third commander, in 1921. He was born in Barre.  He enlisted in the US Army at Fort Slocum, NY, on 14 December 1917, and served with the 31st Recruiting Squadron in Waco, Texas, the 71st Aero Squadron, and Squadron “A” Flying School at Love Field, Texas.  He served as Private, Corporal, and Sergeant First Class, and was discharged 15 March 1919. Here in Barre, Mr. Straiton was General Manager, Vice President and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Rock of Ages Corporation. His grave is in Section B of Hope Cemetery.

 

Apparently, he lived at 100 Nelson Street, near the spot where Lt Governor Jackson was swept away in the 1927 Flood.
