Cdr. Guy VARNUM

Guy VARNUM, Captain, Ordinance Corps, was the first commander of Post 10 in 1919. He was born in Cambridge, Vermont, and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1906. He joined the US Army and attended training in Plattsburg, NY, from 25 August to 25 November 1917. He was called into active service (ordinance branch) on 10 December 1917. His assignments included service at Hartford, Conn., Utica, NY, the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) and Washington, D.C. He served overseas from 7 February 1918 to 18 February 1919, and was discharged on 21 February 1919. He was associated with the granite industry, specifically the Boutwell, Milne and Varnum Company where he was production manager. This company was incorporated as Rock of Ages in 1925.

Apparently around 1940, he moved to California and appears in the Los Angeles census as a rancher.   He died in Los Angeles, CA, 25 Jan 1952 and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Acacia, Glendale, Los Angeles City, CA, Map 1, Lot 3114, Space 2.

(His father, Harvey Varnum, was not only one of the pioneers of the local granite industry, he was also responsible for laying out the St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain Railway and for building the road through Smugglers’ Notch.)
