Comrades:

CONGRATULATONS DEAN MENDENHALL PROVO POST #13. December 13th we made the Department Commanders 100% Membership Club. As of January 29th we are at 107%

2013 is an exciting year. We have much to celebrate and more exciting events coming.

Eldred Center Contract Sunsets: We are invited to use the Mayors City Council Meeting room. We are still negotiating a permanent location that meets the needs of the Organization and our members. It is the intent that events listed below be our events, activities and contact locations until March when we will hopefully have more information to announce at that time.
January we supported the District #4 Oratorical Scholarship Contest. This was the most attended Oratorical Contest with 7 contestants. The competiton is getting stiffer, more competitive, and educationally rewarding. Adam Robertson, from Provo High School won the District competition and will represent us at Department. The Department competition changed locations this year as policy changes in our Government Facilities for our use for this program. Below is the Department information for the Oratorical Scholarship Contest. Hope you can attend to watch and support our youth. Public welcomed. National Vice Commander will be at this event so please attend dinner with her after the event that evening. (TBD)

Department Oratorical Scholarship Contest:
Who; All Contestants, All Districts
What: Department of Utah, The American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Contest
When: 9 Feb 2013
Where: Canyon School, 9150 South 500 West, Sandy (Exit # 295 – 9000 South. Go west one block, then 1 block south; it is next to the Maverick.
Time: 12 PM
Awards will be as follows: 1st $500.00 2nd $300.00 and 3rd 200.00. plus National travel expenses for 1st place.

Many events are happening so mark you calendars and read the Schedule of events that are planned on separate pages of calendar of events. Blood Drive, Cross Roads of the West Gun Show, Legion Birthday, Spaghetti Dinner for Payson and Ogden Veterans Homes, Music from the Heart Fund Raiser for Payson Veteran’s Home. For February: Post 13 is hosting a Blood Drive. This will be a t Applebee’s in Orem, on President’s Day, March 18th. Come join us and tell your friends, neighbors and advertise it in your Ward News Letters. (See Attachment)

ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Nomination for Officers is now open. Anyone wanting to run for the following offices please contact our Election Chairman: Roger Lear. (831-402-3127) Nominations can be made the evening of the elections. We will have elections during the Legion Birthday Social. Offices up for election are:
· Adjutant and Finances (Consolidated positions for conveniences of the Legion)
· 1st Vice Commander (Committees)
· 2nd Vice Commander (Membership)
· Sergeant –at- Arms

American Legion Post 13 Events: 2013-2019

Due to our change in location and the Eldred center being demolished in February, events and meetings will change. The destruction of the Eldred Center will change our meeting location. During this transition we will use Post events, District, and Department events through March as our re-scheduling of meetings. When the location is finalized you will receive an Updated location schedule and regular meeting time will re-convene Every 3rd Wednesday. Location still to be finalized and contracts re-written. We will keep you informed.

March 2013 The American Legion Birthday Month

· Boys State / Girl State due District (NOTE) I met with the School Counselors Jan 28, 2013 Students cost for Boy State will be $425 per applicant. Post 13 will pay candidates $100.00 and pay bus fees. Students will pay $325.00. When they Graduate from Boy State and give their Reports we will give them another $50.00 Interviews will be 15 Feb 2013.
