The red poppy is named the official flower of The American Legion during the organization’s second national convention, in Cleveland. Made famous by the 1915 John McCrae poem, “In Flanders Fields,” the poppy, which grew in great abundance on the battlefields of France, becomes known worldwide as a symbol of military sacrifice and remembrance.
