Fast forward 60 years after Verna Ruth Harris enlisted as a U.S. Navy WAVE in June, 1944. At 81 years old, she received the Volunteer of the Year award presented by the American Legion Department of Texas. She was one of 18 nominees from 126 posts and drove an hour to volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Longview for years.
