During the New Business segment of Turnbow-Higgs Post 240's August 18th, 2015 regular monthly meeting, Post 240 Adjutant, Roger Easter, introduced a resolution naming Past Commander James T. (Tom) Smith Sr. a Post 240 Honorary Life Member. Motion to approve was made by Fred Cross and a second by Honorary Life Member Brad Thompson. A vote was taken and the resolution was adopted.

Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240 located in Stephenville, TX was chartered by the United States Congress in 1920. In its 95 year history only nine Post 240 members have been recognized by Post 240 membership as Honorary Life Members.

Turnbow-Higgs Post 240 members receiving this distinction and year they were honored are; Brad Thompson(D), John Rogers & Ben B. McCollum (D)- 1992; Brian Whitecotton & B.R. Kirkland- 1998; J. Fred Cross- 2002; Leroy Griffin- 2007; Don Douglas- 2011 (D) and Roger Easter- 2014.

On Tuesday August 18th, 2015 at its regular monthly meeting, Turnbow-Higgs Post 240 members bestowed this honor on Past Commander James T. (Tom) Smith Sr., making him the tenth member of this distinguished group.

Tom Smith’s 21 years of continuous service to Turnbow-Higgs Post 240 The American Legion was summarized in the resolution as follows; WHEREAS, Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240 of Stephenville, Texas occasionally honors one of their own by making them an honorary life member and; WHEREAS, such an honor is bestowed upon those members who have shown a willingness to dedicate themselves to the Post beyond the call of duty and; WHEREAS, such a member is paid-up-for-life and begins his 22nd consecutive year of American Legion membership and; WHEREAS, member’s immediate family is the first and only family member of Post 240. (Wife Marilyn & Son John) and; WHEREAS, He has honorably served his country in the U.S.NAVY and; WHEREAS, Post 240 has a member who has served The American Legion in several leadership positions, including Post Commander, Post Vice Commander, Post Adjutant and 17th District Vice Commander and 17th District Commander; NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Executive Committee of the Post in session on August 11, 2015 did unanimously vote to submit JAMES T. (TOM) SMITH SR. to receive the Life Member status to the general membership and such membership did ratify this request in regular session on August 21, 2015

Comrade Tom Smith will be presented an Honorary Life Member Certificate that reads;

This honor is given in recognition and sincere appreciation of outstanding loyalty and dedication to Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240. This honor recognizes the commitment demonstrated towards the programs, activities, and ideals of The American Legion dedicated to God and Country.
