Turnbow-Higgs Post 240 and Auxiliary Unit 240 the American Legion, with financial aid from local donors, sponsored seven local students as delegates to the 2015 Girls and Boys State programs held in June.

The delegates and their families were invited to Turnbow-Higgs Post 240 & Unit 240’s regular monthly meeting held on Tuesday August 18. Following an opening ceremony that included prayer, the singing of The National Anthem and a buffet meal, each delegate came to the podium and spoke to a full house of Legionnaires, guests and family sharing what the week’s seminar meant to them.

Girls and Boys State are unique programs that educate future leaders about government, civics, and patriotism in a “learn by doing” environment. Each delegate has just finished their junior year of high school and was hand-picked by teachers, counselors, and local American Legion posts throughout Texas to attend this one week seminar.

Texas Boys State delegates were housed at the University of Texas where most activities occurred. Celebrating its 75th year, Boys State enrolled 1018 delegates, the largest group ever. The Girls State seminar is held annually at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. The 2015 Girls State enrollment exceeded all expectations with 540 delegates.

The programs are open to all High School Junior students including Home and Private Schools. Interested Students and parents should contact their high school counselor.
