On August 25, 1999 the City of Stephenville honored a request by Bea M. Marin, then Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240 Commander and Stephenville City Council member, by graciously providing 100 burial spaces in West Memorial Cemetery. This action was made necessary when all available burial spaces at the original Veterans Field of Honor, located at East Memorial Cemetery, had been used.

Past Post 240 Commander, Lyle Lacy, arranged through Rawlins Monument to purchase a monument constructed of red granite from India, the only place this type granite is found. Rawlins then engraved and installed the monument.

Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240 provided funding of the Veterans Field of Honor project which included Monument, Flag Pole (including electric utility cost for flag lighting) and Walkways through public donations and selling of memorial bricks located on either side of walkways.

Selling of Memorial bricks continues today. Memorial brick purchases are not limited to military veterans. Persons wishing to honor friend, neighbor or family members by purchasing a memorial Brick may do so by speaking to any Post 240 member.

Dedication of the West Memorial Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor was held on November 11, 2001. Lyle C. Lacy, Post 240 Commander, was master of ceremonies and State Representative Sid Miller was guest speaker.

Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post 240 is continually grateful to the City for their contribution of the space as well as admirable care of the plot.
