In September 1939, community leaders gathered on East Washington Street in Stephenville, Texas, to break ground for the new American Legion Post 240 building. The project, to be constructed by the National Youth Administration, marked an important civic improvement for the city and a lasting home for local veterans and Legion activities.
Those taking part in the groundbreaking ceremony included, from left to right, L. G. Rich; American Legion Post 240 Commander, Hub Garrett; Stephenville Mayor, Henry Clark; U.S. Congressman Clyde L. Garrett; John Tarleton Agricultural College Dean, J. Thomas Davis; two unidentified National Youth Administration representatives, and U.S. Congressman Garrett’s aide, Wesley Clements.
