A proposed veterans’ memorial in Soldier Spring Park is one step closer to fruition after Weatherford City Council members gave approval to a concept plan as part of Tuesday night’s council meeting.

The plan for the memorial was approved by Parks and Recreation board members last month. City staff took over the concept plan earlier this year so the three groups asking for the memorial, Gold Star Families, American Legion and VFW posts, could focus on the fundraising. As fundraising for the memorial continues, more and more aspects of the memorial will be implemented, according to Parks and Recreation Director Danielle Felts.

The memorial, which will have access off Thrush Street, will include a grand entryway, a memorial green and an events pavilion, including weddings and concerts. Also to be included is a walk of honor, for which an estimated 4,000 bricks are on sale now. Bench seating will also be provided.

Mayor Dennis Hooks asked that no corporate advertising be placed on bricks or benches.

One of the most popular of the memorial ideas is a prayer garden that will sit in back of the walk of honor and includes benches, a water feature and some landscape plantings for a serene feel for those that need a minute to get away.

A war memorial will focus on the sacrifices made in the wars America has fought in, Felts said.
