WEATHERFORD — American Legion Post 163 recognized Flag Day Thursday evening by giving about 2,000 flags a proper disposal ceremony.

Veterans and young children were among the group that participated or watched the annual flag burning ceremony at the American Legion in Weatherford.

Post Commander Bill Mallory said they’ve been disposing of the community’s unserviceable flags for a long time but began doing so in a more ceremonial manner about 10 years ago.

The group recently sent a couple of speakers to the Cub Scouts day camp to talk about flag disposal, Sons of the American Legion Commander Johnathan Poe said.

Community members can drop off their worn, tattered or otherwise unserviceable flags at the American Legion year round, Poe said.

“That’s what we do. That’s what we’re here for,” he said.
