Representatives of Weatherford American Legion Post 163 were in the Greenwood community Saturday to dedicate a flagpole at the local cemetery.

The flagpole is the first step in a planned memorial to all veterans buried there.

The ceremony was conducted by Chuck Katlic with Bill Mallory and Paul Foley presenting the colors.

Katlic is well known for his involvement in Parker County veteran’s affairs.

Following the flag raising and national anthem, Katlic spoke at length of the importance of honoring our veterans.

Speaking of his own dedication to the country Katlic said, “I might be 84 years old and can’t march, but if I am needed they can put me in a tank and I can still pull the trigger.”

The memorial plaque to be placed at the site of the flag will include the names of all veterans buried in the cemetery.

“We will start with the several civil war veterans because they are the oldest and there are a few from the Spanish-American War,” Katlic said.

The flagpole was donated and installed by the Parker County Active Democrats. The project was started by the late Jimmy Graves and the pole was built by Graves and his son, Brad. Graves’s wife, Wanda, and several family members were on hand for the ceremony.

The ceremony concluded with the playing of “Taps.”
