HISTORY

1920

Post 121 started

Jan 1923

In 1923, James A. Edmond American Legion Post 121 was started. The post consisted entirely of WWI veterans. They were very active in the community, and played/sponsored baseball teams and sponsored Boy Scouts.

1940

War effort

Jan 1942

During WWII, the post shut down to concentrate their efforts to the war. Six veterans donated $10,000 of their personal money to re-open the post in downtown Waco.

1950

Tornado

May 11, 1953

On May 11, 1953, an F4 tornado tore through downtown Waco, killing 13 and injuring 153. The 20-mile path resulted in the destruction or damage of 519 homes, 19 businesses and 150 cars.  The post was one of those businesses that saw damage.  During the cleanup caused by the tornado, the City of Waco requested the post to vacate their location.  The post and the VFW combined their resources to purchase a building at 4th..

The cannon

Jan 1956

In 1956, a McLennan County judge loaned Post 121 a cannon from the county courthouse. Member Jack Hannah towed the cannon from the courthouse to the post with his pickup truck.

New home

Jan 2012

In 2012, the post home moved to the Greater Waco community of Elm Mott.
