About This Post

What Makes this Post Unique
Post 54, Erin preceded post 73. Post 54 began in 1930 and was chartered September 22, 1930 according to Tennessee Department records. C.W. Mitchum was our first Post 54 Commander and S.D. Dillon was our first Adjutant. According to a typed letter found in Houston County archives from Mrs. Dillon, both Carlisle Mitchum and Dunc Dillon originally joined the American Legion in Clarksville and eventually organized Erin's post once enough interest was shown. On December 12, 1976, an assault with intent to commit murder occurred at the post location. In March of 1977, after the Houston County Grand Jury indicted two members for the offense, the Erin City Council recommended that Post 54 close its location due to the potential for violence and not being "consistent with the wellbeing and welfare" of its citizenry. Post 54's charter was revoked in 1979. In 1984, Post 73 began with 15 members. According to Tennessee Dept. records, in 1985, Robert Shelton was our first Post 73 Commander and Billy Alsobrooks was our first Adjutant with a membership of 50.
