The application for Post 44 was made on November 6, 1919 and was approved by the American Legion Department of Tennessee on November 10, 1919. The National Executive Committee approved the application on November 19, 1919. Although there is no documentation on the first officers it is believed that the first commander was Mr. Willis Shadow and the first adjutant was Mr. T.C. Simmons
