Subject:  Kings Mountain, Post 24, American Legion, Johnson City announces Memorial Day activities

The Kings Mountain Post 24, American Legion is planning a number of activities in conjunction with Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Post 9 and the Mountain Home VA National Cemetery.  Activities are open to all members and of course, the public.

1.  On Saturday, 27 May, about 9:00 am the American Legion and DAV Post 9 will present flags at the head stones of Veterans interred (buried) in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Johnson City.

2.  Later that morning, about 10:30 am, the American Legion, DAV, Boy and Girl Scouts and other organizations, will assist the Mountain Home National Cemetery staff present some 15,500, flags at head stones of Veterans interred in the cemetery in preparation of Memorial Day.

3.  On Memorial Day, 29 May, about 8:00 am, the American Legion will lay a wreath at the WWI Iron Mike/Dough Boy statue/memorial, Johnson City Veterans Memorial Park, E. Main Street (near the Senior Center across from Town Hall/Police Station.  A roll call of the names of the 58 Veterans who gave their lives during WWI will be conducted.  Coffee and donuts will be served at the Legion Hall following the ceremony.  (See attached article, researched and written by Mr Allen Jackson, on the history of this unique WWI memorial).

4.  Later that morning about 11:00 the American Legion will join hundreds of Veterans, family members and appreciative citizens for a celebration at the Mountain Home VA.  (Details are provided by Mt Home public affairs office). 

5.  At 6:00 pm, a special memorial service will be held at the Washington County/Johnson City Veterans Memorial Park, Market Street, to further recognize those who served and those who gave their lives for our country.
