During 1921, then Commander R.F. “Bob” Farrell initiated a building campaign to raise funds to eventually build “The Hut”.
During 1922 the Post held their meetings at the Elk’s Club building on Spring Street. Commander A.B. Bowman secured the Memorial Park located on the corner of Southwest, West Locus and Divine Streets. The park was dedicated to the Johnson City boys who died during WWI. The tablet listed the following names: George Bowman, Fred Campbell, Robert Cooke, Lester Harris, Harrison Hopson, Hobart Jones, Raymond Jones, Thurman Leach, Lawrence Smith, Eddie Wade and James Wheeler.
The “Bean Feed” became the staple meal served prior to monthly meetings beginning in 1923. Often referred to as 7 bean soup, with other vegetables and perhaps a ham bone added.
1926, under the leadership of Joe A. Summers the Post continued to grow and started a building fund to erect a Legion Hut. The deed for a lot was secured to build the home on 29 Apr, 1927. This same year Legion Street was named in recognition of American Legion Post 24 contributions to Johnson City. The post sold $10.00 bonds and $1.00 steal spikes to raise funds and to literally nail the structure together.
Between 1930-1940, the Post emphasized community activities by supporting a boy Scout Troop, starting American Legion Junior Baseball (1933), the Sons of the American Legion (1933), an annual community carnival, various dances and social events as well as a May Decoration Day Parade, 4th July and Veteran’s Day Ceremonies.
November 11, 1935, under the leadership of Commander’s Jack H. Chalky and Lawrence Nave the Post purchased and had installed the “Doughboy” (Iron Mike) statue at the Memorial Park, adjacent to West Main Street, Johnson City
Between 1937-1939, construction work on “The Hut” was started and completed. Commanders Nowell Y. Pace (37-38) and Bernie C. Hall (38-39) led the effort. The first meeting in the Hut was held on 17 March, 1939 (third Friday).
