American Legion Post 13 in Maryville, TN was chartered on August 7, 1919. Post 13 is named for Capt. Emerson J. Lones. Born in 1883, Capt. Lones was the highest-ranking Blount County man killed in World War I. He led Company B, a group of volunteers who answered the call for service against Germany, drilling in Maryville for several weeks before being called to Europe from New York City on May 10, 1918. When Company B returned to Maryville, Capt. Lones was not with them. He was killed in action during the Somme Offensive on September 29, 1918, less than 1 month before the war came to an end.
