Summer 2012 Newsletter - American Legion Post 106, 326 Oakland Road, Sweetwater,TN
Fellow Legionnaires:
Officers installed for 2012-2013 are as follows: Billy Walker, Commander; Lona Buffham, Vice Commander; Theresa Walker, Adjutant; Clinton Riddle, Chaplain; Ross Licata, Chaplain; Frances Brood¬-Weitzel, Finance Officer/Judge Advocate; Bobby Wilson, Sergeant at Arms (also Trustee); Elbern Onley, Sergeant at Arms; Elbert Thurston, Trustee; and Pete Peterman, Trustee. Just a reminder—our meetings are still the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.
In February 2012, we were able to get our Post back from the County and are in the process of getting the other Post assets returned to us that were distributed in an erroneous attempt last May to dissolve the Post. So far it has been a slow and laborious effort. Meanwhile, the Post held a yard sale in March and Poppy Donation in May to obtain funds to operate the Post. Concurrent with the yard sale, a homemade quilt and bicycle were raffled, with the drawing to be held at the June 12, rededication ceremony. More future fund efforts are planned. If you have suggestions for fund raising please contact the Post (423-337-2398).
Another yard sale is being planned, take a look around your house for unused items and consider donating them for the next one. Also, the Post would like to publish a “war” story publication. Please send in your “story” or experiences with photos so that we can generate a history of our Post and most important a history of our members” experiences for future generations.
State American Legion decided to redistribute the membership districts so we now have 10 Districts. We are now in 3rd District under newly elected 3rd District Commander, Lester Norton instead of 2nd District Commander, Dennis Moldenhauer.
Exciting things are happening around the Post. We now have a Ladies Auxiliary to assist us in our many diversified programs supported by the American Legion. A big welcome to these ladies. ALA President is Colleen Ahrens, Vice President is Judith Lee, Secretary is Mary Frayer, and Treasurer is Theresa Walker. All eligible ladies are invited to become a part of the Auxiliary. Contact Colleen, 423-333-3300 or Mary, 423-371-6429 for information regarding the Auxiliary. Their meetings are held the Post on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Enclosed with your 2013 membership card and first newsletter is information regarding the LegionCare limited accident-only insurance which is available to you at no cost. The insurance information must be renewed every three years to be kept in force. Applying is easy, complete and mail the enclosed card or if you have internet access, apply online: www.theLIT.com/Legioncare12.
A rededication of the Post building was held June 12, 2012, with Dennis Smith, outgoing 3rd District Commander and his Sergeant at Arms, Larry Pugnier; Dennis Moldenhauer, 2nd District Commander; Commander William “Bill” Twombly and Ken Reno of Post 257; Paul Julian, District 2, Post 13; Freddie White Smith, District 2 ALA President; Donald Dixon, Post 278 were among those in attendance.
Looking forward to receiving those “war stories” and military experiences. Send them to PO Box 817, Sweetwater, TN 37874.
That’s it for now….until the next time.
