Throughout the history of the post in the city of Clark, the care of our disabled veterans and their families has been of utmost importance. Records of the post in 1931 indicate their efforts in what was called the Arkansas Relief Drive. Headed up by Legionnaire G.F. Sherwood, the members made a county wide drive to solicit help for those in need. It was reported that $945.89 was raised of which $712 went toward buying a car load of flour, $133 was given to the local Red Cross to meet their quota of $400 and a balance of $100.87 cash was sent through Gurney’s of Yankton, SD. In March of this year (1931), at the spring conference, the Red Cross then chaired by Gov. S.H. Elrod, asked for a state-wide survey of the needs of people. G.F. Sherwood was appointed chairman of the survey for Clark County and through his efforts several carloads of
wheat and flour were received in the county. Legionnaire Glen Levitt worked side by side with Governor Elrod in keeping of the paper work and setting up for the relief. Also assisting in the relief were members of the community Mrs. Severance, Mrs. J.D. Chance and Elmer Kirkeby.
