Every year students of the Elk Mountain School present a program to honor “their” veterans. On 09 November 2017 Elk Mountain School students from kindergarten to 9th grade performed patriotic music, conducted readings, and presented each veteran present with a carnation. A coffee and pie social accompanied the program. Flag retirement and raising ceremonies were conducted by the students. Custer Post #46 supported the students by providing both an American and South Dakota flag. This wonderful program is a delightful example of what was until recently common across the nation but is now rapidly vanishing with the loss of our country schools. Those attending truly saw “America the Beautiful”.
