 Louis Raymond Cottier

Killed in Action on Leyte Island, Philippines

Louis R. Cottier was born on July 16, 1916 in Porcupine, South Dakota.  His parents were John and Agnes (Janis) Cottier.  He was raised in Porcupine with his eleven siblings, Bert, Leo, Robert, John, Ken, Lucy, Isabelle, Margaret, Eleanor, Roseanne and Lillian.  He attended Oglala Community School and went into the Army from school.  Louis had one son, Donald G. Cottier. 

 Louis entered the Army on June 26, 1940 at Camp Warren, Wyoming.  He was then trained at Camp Wolters, Texas, where he became a member of Company D, 61st Training Battalion.  He was later sent overseas to the Philippine Islands.  One night while on guard duty and looking for Japanese, he was shot and killed by a sniper on Leyte Island.  He was survived by his parents, siblings and son, Donald.  He died at the age of 26 years old.  Louis will long be remembered for his service to his country.
