Earl K. Hofemann was born on October 20, 1924, in Tulare, South Dakota. His parents were Ernest Conrad and Elizabeth Helen Hofemann. Earl’s father died March 11, 1934, when Earl was only ten years old. Earl attended grade school and high school in Tulare. During the six-month prior to Earl’s enter into active service, he was employed by Carl Hofemann in Tulare. He had a brother named Martin L. Hofemann who also entered the Army and died serving his country.
Earl Hofemann enlisted in the Army and on February 10, 1944, entered active service at Fort Crook, Nebraska. Trained at Fort McClellan, Alabama, Earl served in the continental United States and came home on leave on June 25, 1944. Upon returning to active duty, Pvt. Hofemann was sent to Fort George Meade, Maryland, to prepare to ship out for duty overseas; he left the U.S. on July 28, 1944. After arriving in Italy, Pvt. Hofemann had additional training near Naples as part of the 7th Army, 142nd Infantry.
Private Earl K. Hofemann was killed in action in France on November 27, 1944. Although originally buried in France, Earl’s remains were returned to the United States after the war and reburied near Tulare.
