Inar Herbert Lellelid was born August 30, 1925, in Colman, South Dakota, to Hans and Inga Lellelid. He had three brothers: Harold, Clarence, Leo, and two sisters, Mae and Mrs. Richard Ferree. Inar graduated from high school in 1943, where he had been involved in athletics and music, among other things.  He is remembered for “the ease in with which he made and kept friends,” and for being a “generous, accommodating, and energetic young man who loved life and took an interest in all the activities of the school and community.”

 Inar Lellelid entered active service on December 4, 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. From there he was sent to Camp Fannin, Texas, for his basic training and then on to Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky. He then found himself in various camps before being returned to Camp Breckenridge to await his orders for overseas duty. Pfc. Lellelid went overseas to the European theater on October 22, 1944.

 On January 17, 1945, Private First Class Inar Lellelid, Company F, 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, was killed in action in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. He was just 19 years old.
