Jacob A. Heinrich

Died as a Prisoner of War of the Japanese

Jacob A. Heinrich was “a native or Herreid [South Dakota], graduated from the University of South Dakota and later received his M.A. degree from the University of Ohio,” before returning to teach at Herreid for a year. Jacob then moved on to Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he held a federal position for “some time.”

 Jacob “held a rank in the army through his affiliation at the University was called to the ranks in 1941.” Heinrich was sent to the Philippines for duty before the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and was “trapped on Corregidor at the time of the Jap invasion.”

 Nothing else is available on Captain Jacob Heinrich other than the news, delivered in the Aberdeen American News on June 22, 1945: “Word has been received here from Mrs. Jacob A. Heinrich of Palo Alto, Calif., that her husband, Capt. Jacob A. Heinrich, died in a Jap prison camp.”

 His name was not listed on the American Battle Monuments Commission site as an overseas burial.
