The Legion is an active organization involved in community, state, and national affairs. Roy S. Hickman Legion Post 78 has provided the Color Guard for many school, civic functions and local and statewide parades. Also in recent years the Post has held numerous programs at the Leola School on Flag Day, Veterans Day and special flag disposal ceremonies. Post 78 also holds Memorial Day Services with Color Guard/Firing Squad appearing at both local cemeteries every year plus at all local veteran burial services.

Here, these delegates obtain firsthand knowledge of how the American Government works. The Legion also makes contributions to the Leola High School for purchasing equipment or facility improvement. The Legion also has a student loan fund. This fund is available to students who have graduated from Leola High School and wish to continue their education.

When the city built the Municipal Swimming Pool, the Legion was involved. A summer baseball program is supported by the Legion, in which Legion and Teener teams have been very successful.
