Namesake Monserrate Padilla

In 1932, Monserrate Padilla lost his battle to illnesses caused by the affects of mustard gas. After the death of Monserrate Padilla, Post #47 named the Post in his honor. Information received from family members and fellow veterans is that Monserrate Padilla was one of the first members of the city of Cabo Rojo to enlist into the Army. According to a book "el Jibarito y la Loma", written by Mario Padilla (brother of Monserrate); Monserrate Padilla enlisted in the army while he lived in New York on 25 February 1918. He was a member of Company K, 307th Infantry Regiment with whom he went to the battlefront in Europe in April 1918. After fighting in the battles of Alsacia-Lorena and Chateau Thierry, he was ultimately wound on 26 August 1918. It is believed that his unit was one of the units attached to the lost Battalion (Company K, 307th Infantry Regiment). Monserrate Padilla fought in some of the fiercest battles pushing the Germans back for the first time during the First World War. Although we do not know for sure, all the information that has been made available to us leads us to believe that Monserrate Padilla was a member of the lost Battalion. All records state that only those who were not wounded were accounted for. We cannot confirm nor deny that Monserrate Padilla was one of the wounded of the Lost Battalion. En 1932, Monserrate Padilla fallecio a causa de los efectos de mustard gas. El Puesto #47 fue nombrado en honor de Monserrate Padilla. Se nos ha dicho por los legionarios del años pasados que Monserrate fue uno de los primeros Caborrojeños a enlistarse en el ejército. Según el libro "el Jibarito y la Loma", escrito por el hermano de Monserrate, Mario Padilla, sabemos que “estando en Nueva York se enlistó el 25 de febrero de 1918 como soldado raso en la Compañía K del Regimiento 307 de Infantería, habiendo llegado al frente europeo en abril de 1918. Después de luchar en las batallas de Alsacia-Lorena y Chateau Thierry, fue herido en esta ultima el 26 de agoste de 1918…” Sabemos que de los heridos sólo los no trasportable se mantuvieron. Las unidades involucradas en la batallón perdido fueron el 306 regimentó de infantería , Compañías c y D, Compañía K, regimiento 307 de infantería, 308 Regimiento de infantería, compañía a, b, c, e, g. h.
Monserrate luchó en algunos de los más feroces enfrentamientos empujando a los alemanes a la defensiva por primera vez durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. toda la información disponible nos lleva a creer que Monserrate Padilla estaba con el Batallón Perdido ( Compañía K, regimiento 307 de infantería). Sólo aquellos que salieron sanos y salvos se contabilizan. No hubo información sobre los heridos de Argonne.
