Post 223 member Galen Albert “Tubb” “Smitty” Smith, 83, of 424 Clifton Road, Shippensburg, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and family, on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, in Select Specialty at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

Born on March 14, 1926, in Shippensburg, he was a son of the late Clarence C. and Grace M. Cover Smith.

He was a 1944 graduate of Shippensburg High School and was of the Lutheran faith. Tubb was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the destroyer, the U.S.S. Charles S. Sperry in the Pacific Theatre. He was awarded a number of decorations, including the Meritorious Mast for helping to save a shipmate’s life.
