February, 1962
Past Commanders Night was observed 1 February with lee Myers Jt., deputy 19th District Commander, serving as toastmaster. Pennsylvania State Commander George Bruno was the honored guest and gave the address that evening. Past Commanders of the post who were present were: H.a. Crownover, Fred Squires, Wilber Goodhart, Harvey Eckenrode, Earl Brindle, william Burkhart, mark snoke, B.W. Brechbiel, Kenneth Coleman, mark Hemminger, Gerald Hummel, Ambrose Naugle and Lee Myers Jr.
Department Commander Bruno presented a gold life membership card to Mark Snoke who served the post as commander last year. John Snoke, president of the Home Association, presented Past Commander Snoke a gold lapel pin.
The post sponsored the annual spring dance and Military ball for the Scotland School children in the school gymnasium 23 February 1962.
Earl Sollenberger, Veterans Affairs Representative from Congressman Goodling's Office, started the practice of visiting the post on the first Monday of each month to answer Congressional questions for interested members on veterans affairs.
March, 1962
Death benefits of $100.00 each were paid to the beneficiaries of these deceased members: Charles Funston, Lydia Baily, James Neidig and Waren White.
The post purchased a billboard space at the little League Field for $25.00 The post also donated $5.00 to the Red Cross campaign.
The post sponsored a Junior American Legion baseball team whose manager was Dannie Knox. Uniforms and transportation to and from out of town games and umpire fees were paid for by the post. ages of the boys ranged from 14 to 18 years.
April, 1962
Ambrose Naugle, chairman of the Bells For Freedom Campaign, arranged for all bells in Shippensburg to toll on 19 April between 1:00 and 4:00 P.M.
May, 1962
The post participated in the annual Memorial Day observances in Shippensburg and surrounding communities.
July, 1962
Gary Whistler was the boy sponsored by the post to attend the American Legion's annual Keystone Boy's State which was held at Penn State University. Howard Crownover, chairman, introduced Gary who gave the post a talk on the experience he had taking part in the exercise of citizenship in the democratic model government in which the boys took part.
August, 1962
Comrade Kenneth Miller gave a report on the State Convention he attended as a delegate.
September, 1962
The following officers were installed to serve the post: Commander-Michael Shaner, First Vice Commander-Earl Beckenbaugh, second vice Commander-Robert Bufkin, Finance Officer-lee Myers Jr., Judge Advocate-Hilton Russell, Service Officer-Charles Koontz, historian-William Burkhart, Sgt at Arms-Kenneth Rhone and Chaplain-mark Snoke.
Comrade Ambrose Naugle was elected Commander of the Cumberland Council for 1963. The post entertained the Council as host post for the meeting held 4 September 1962 at which Comrade Naugle was elected. Lee Myers Jr., was elected to serve as adjutant for the council.
Death benefits were paid to the beneficiaries of these members: Oscar Miller $50.00 and John Woodrow $100.00.
October, 1962
A letter was read from the Shippensburg Council of Churches asking the post to participate in the Human relations Project for Desegregation in Shippensburg. The post action approved a hands of policy and the adjutant was instructed to write the Council that the post would take no action in the project.
The post donated $25.00 to the Shippensburg Community chest.
November, 1962
Officers past and present of the post took part in the Veteran's Day program staged in the auditorium of the Shippensburg Area Junior High School.
Approval was made by the post to have their basement designated as a Civil Defense Shelter.
the Americanism Committee purchased six flags and presented them to the Training school at the College.
December, 1962
The annual Scotland School Christmas Party was held 8 December cosponsored as in the past years by the Shippensburg Post, the Cumberland County council and the 40 & 8. It consisted of a free movie, shopping for gifts and a Christmas dinner in the evening at the post home. Total of 38 children had a fine day.
Announcement was made that Lee Myers Jr., was appointed a member of the National Advisory Committee of the American Legion.
Commander Shaner broke with the tradition this year by arranging to have the annual Christmas party for member's children held at the Victory Theater this year instead of in the post home. The evening, 20 December, consisted of a free movie and the distribution of gifts by Santa Claus. the party was enjoyed by all and rated a huge success.
