Past Commanders Night: Department Commander Hoak gave the address of the evening and presented a gold life membership card to William Burkhart, immediate past commander of the post.
March, 1961
the post by a close vote approved the placement of two lots in spring Hill Cemetery where veterans of the past wars are buried into perpetual care for the price of $80.00. In previous years the post had been placing three such lots into perpetual care at a cost of $120.00, a practice started shortly after WW11, with the intention of someday having all rough lots having all lots cared for in which veterans are buried. For financial reasons, this was the last year the project was carried on. Approximately 20 such lots remain without perpetual care.
The 10 rifles, M1903, formerly used by the Purple Heart Chapter, were turned over to the American Legion Post by William Burkhart, chapter adjutant. The chapter has ceased to operate after 11 years activity following WW11.
April, 1961
Winners of the post's annual Essay Contest were: David Caufman 1st place prize $18.75 savings Bond, Kathy Chase 2nd place prize $10.00 cash and Shelby Coy 3rd place prize $5.00.
Robert and William Shoap, children of Orville Shoap, Newburg, were admitted to Scotland School with the help of the post.
Death Benefit paid to Raymond Gipe - $75.00 to beneficiary.
Comrade Dannie Knox served as manager of the Junior Baseball Team and arranged a schedule of games for the season with other Franklin County Teams. A budget of $176.00 was set up for the team's expenses for the summer.
May, 1961
The post participated in Memorial day exercises in Shippensburg and community and appropriated $100.00 toward the costs of the observance in Shippensburg. General Breakfield, commander of Letterkenny Ordnance Depot, was the speaker in Shippensburg.
The post paid its rental fee of $25.00 to the Little League for the American Legion billboard sign at the ball field.
Death Benefits were paid out to Arthur Beistle, Samuel Smith an John Gallas $100.00 each to beneficiary.
