The post purchased a flag for the Kline school through the PTA for use on the school's display standard. Cost was $5.00.
February, 1956
The annual Military ball given at Scotland School 17 February with Tiny Wright's Orchestra furnishing the music was a huge success. Mark Hemminger was the post's chairman in charge of the affair.
March, 1956
Past Commander's Night was held at the post home on 5 March with Attorney William R. Mark serving as toastmaster. Department Commander John F. Stay gave the address that evening.
The post was saddened by the death of Past Commander Edmund O. Hunter. Nineteen members of the post, including Minutemen, participated in the funeral rites.
On the 17th of March the Legion's Weight Lifting team entered state competition with the following wrestling teams at the local high school gymnasium: West Chester SSTC, Harrisburg "Y" and Pennsylvania State College.
May, 1956
The Essay Contest was one of the highlights of the post year. The essays were adjudged tops and prizes of $18.75, $10.00, $5.00 and $1.00 were awarded to the writers. The winner of the contest was entered in the Cumberland County Contest and later awarded second place in the county competition.
B.W. Brechbiel served as chairman of the Shippensburg Community Memorial Day observance again this year. Observances were also held in Newburg, Orrstown, Middle Spring, Cleversburg and Roxbury.
The American Legion Post financed the perpetual care of two more rough lots in Spring Hill Cemetery on which veterans of past wars are buried. Comrade William Burkhart, Graves Registration chairman, was assisted in the placement of flags on 696 veterans graves by theses comrades: Herbert Beckenbaugh, Mark Hemminger, Marvin Hemminger, Melvin Rosenberry, Harper Coleman and Ambrose Naugle.
