Seems like a matter of days until spring gives way to summer and another season arrives for picnics, swimming, vacationing, traveling and heading to the parks with family and friends. For many, Memorial Day weekend signals the start of summer, and it begins with pausing on the holiday - once called Decoration Day - to pay tribute to the military men and women who died in defense of Americans' freedoms.

Religious and community programs mark the Memorial Day schedule for Indiana County.
American Legion Post 141 in Indiana will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park. Indiana Mayor George Hood will be the master of ceremonies, and Father George Hnatko will be the chaplain.

Active and retired military people representing all branches of the service will present wreaths in memory of those who died in each of America's armed conflicts.

The program will include selections of patriotic music by the Indiana Area High School band. Lunch will be served immediately following at the American Legion.
