Indiana American Legion Post 141 will host the community's traditional Memorial Day program, post officers announced today.

The event will be held at 10:30 a.m. May 31 at Indiana's Memorial Park at South Sixth Street and Wayne Avenue. Event chairman Richard Hoover of Post 141 said the general public is encouraged to attend, adding that representatives of all patriotic, veterans and military organizations will participate.

Indiana Borough Mayor George Hood will serve as master of ceremonies. The Rev. George Hnatko will ask the invocation and pronounce the benediction, while Army Lt. Col. Jack Carbone will coordinate the traditional laying of the wreaths.

Hoover said the annual program, for the first time, will include the Iraq and Afghanistan war zones separately in the laying of wreaths honoring those Americans who have died in the nation's armed conflicts. The Iraqi and Afghanistan zones, Hoover said, were formerly lumped together with Desert Storm as the “Gulf Wars.”

The program, he added, will also include a tribute to Army Maj. David Farabaugh, an Indiana native, and Indiana County Veterans Affairs director Brenda Stormer, who initiated the action to separately honor Indiana County's military personnel who have lost their lives in the Iraqi and Afghanistan war zones.

The ceremonies will also feature the reading of General Logan's Orders by Charles Albright and Cathy Boyer.

The Indiana Area Senior High School band will provide patriotic music.

Hoover said Indiana VFW Post 1989 will also have a role in the program, providing active support as the honor guard.
