During the years of 1919 and 1920, the American Legion and Arthur J. Matheny Post 64 were in their infancy. But before the election of 1920, everyone realized the American Legion was an organization of ex-servicemen that had come to stay, and its influence in national and local affairs were being felt. It was realized that the American Legion was to become an asset to a community in which a post was located.
The first state convention of the American Legion was held in Oklahoma City in October of 1920. Lee Gilstrap, a member of Arthur J. Matheny Post was elected the first Sgt at Arms of the state organization. The Arthur J. Matheny Post was well represented at the convention, and was recognized as one of the leaing posts in the state.
The ex-service men of Post 64 were so well impressed with the organization under the leadership of Commander Feuquay that in the membership drive in the spring of 1920, the membership was more than doubled over that of 1919.
