Carter C. Hanner World War I officer for whom Stillwater's Hanner-Sharp Post 129 of the American Legion is named, was "always a soldier at heart", his formoer buddies recall. Lt, Hanner was a training officer in gas mask instruction at Camp Bowie until being sent to France on July 4, 1918. He was promoted to captain, serving at the front with Company I, 142nd Infantry of the 36th Division. Capt. Hanner was killed in action Oct 6, 1918 in the Meuse-Argonne drive which cracked the German' Hindenburg line. He is burried in the American cemetery at the battlefield site near Romagne, France.
