About This Post

Post Namesake

First Lieutenant Robert Hurst Turner was killed near flanders field in Belgium on July 24, 1918. He was serving with Company "C" 115th" Machinegun Batallion, 30th Division North Carolina Army National Guard when he was killed and then interned at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville NC. According to Find a grave.com and Ancestry.com, Mr Turner was a football star at Wake Forest. When the United States entered the Great War, Mr Turner patriotically joined the US Army. Evidence suggests that Hurst Turner also served with the Royal Canadian Army to get into action sooner. For more information read a Statesville Record and Landmark article by Historian OC Stonestreet dated July 27.2014. It is avaliable on the internet just google Mr Turner's name. Mr Turner was actually buried twice. Once in a cemetery by the Pas De Calais and then again in Oakwood Cemetery according to Mr Stonestreet's excellent work. Mr Turner was the first man from Statesville NC killed in the war and the third from Iredell County. Photo Credit Joan from Find a Grave.com. Author of Mr Turner's Find a Grave Page.

Notable Members

Kent Phyfe, an Iraq war veteran and a disabled veteran, serves our post in many ways.  As an accomplished service officer, Kent and his service dog Mike teach recovering veterans the fine art of transition to civilian life. Rick Shroyer,Post Judge advocate and a radio station manager, gives us a vital link so we can acheive our public relations goals. Although he is not a member, the relationship with veteran, musician Rockie Lynn gives us someone to entertain us with patriotic tunes from a talented former airborne Ranger. The list could go on and on.

What Makes this Post Unique

At the present time, American Legion Post 65 has a unique blend of veterans and auxiliary who posess enormous technical talent. All links and photographs have been accomplished in a team environment. The synergy at this post rivals that of active military culture. Whether it is a burial detail or web page and technical design, Post 65 is ready and able with a contingent of page builders and cyber instructors. Auxiliary President Amy Wilhelm Cook is the admin for facebook and Utube productions.Service Officer Kent Phyfe teaches cyber usage and builds web pages for veterans organizations. To say the least, this is the most talent and ambition I have ever seen at a Veterans organization. Such camaraderie can only be seen at Post 65.

Woodrow Wilson sworn in

Jan 20, 1913

Woodrow Wilson serves as America's President from 1913-1921. With the immortal words of President George Washington guiding America's journey through history "no entangling alliances", President Wilson, former history professor and president of Princeton, seemed to be sailing along in an isolationist type of trance. Shortly after inauguration of his second term this isolationist trance would be challenged by people like Teddy Roosevelt. Further exascerbating the problem was the sinking of three US merchant ships by..

The labrynth of entangling alliances

The labrynth of entangling alliances

turns Europe into a powder keg. With the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, Germany feels free to take Europe by storm and thus drive a wedge between a complex litany of peace treaties and mutual defense alliances.  In doing so, the following treaties are challenged to the diplomatic core:  1. Russia and Serbia treaty is challenged. 2. French and Russian agreements. 3. Germany invades Belgium and gains access to France. 4, Britain and France declare war..

Once America got over the isolationist attitude, patriotism took over. America raises an Army based on 90% enlisted people. Although draft card research is fun, it will give only a 10% yield on research for this era.

President Wilson announces his peace plan

Jan 8, 1918

President Wilson's 14 points for peace go to the bargaining table. Although this would result in peace via The Treaty of Versailles, the groundwork for the League of Nations and World War II were laid. Hitler would use the terms of the treaty in every conceivable fashion to mobilize the supposedly disarmed nation of Germany.
