So, Miss Salisbury 1934, Esther Coleman Hambley, graduated Boyden High School this year and was crowned Miss North Carolina at the American Legion State Convention in Greensboro August 31, 1934.
Her father, W.H. Hambley, son of E.B.C. Hambley was too strick to let her attend the National Competition in Miami, Fl. that year.
Ms. Hambley's room mate at the Greensboro Convention was Edith McKinney and her daughter Pat Mitchell has written a book, "A Mountain to Climb" that tells of her mothers family history. Pat Mitchell would like to find a "group picture" that was taken at the 1934 Miss North Carolina pageant for her hitorical records and that is what brought me to this sight (searching).
Esther Coleman Hambley married Brigadier General Frank Elmore Wilson and they are buried together at the Arlington National Cemetery. Her daughter Juliette Wilson Smith has archived the years of her fathers letters to her mother from Germany during WWII. She compiled them and presented them to the Library of Congress just this year.
