At the unveiling of a plaque in Cedarhurst Park for 8 local veterans killed in WW 1, a local KKK chapter attempted to place a wreath at the flagpole. After an adhoc meeting at the ceremony, headed by Col and Post Commander Cornelius Wickersham, members of Lawrence Cedarhurst Post 339, headed by former Navy veteran John Richter would not allow the placement of the wreath and destroyed it. Fights broke out in the park between American Legionnaires and Klan. Wickersham's father had served as US Attorney General under President Taft and the story was covered by the NY Times and Brooklyn Eagle.
