Many local WWI Veterans lived in the area of newly named Valhalla, previously called Kensico Station, before the big Kensico dam was built. Our Post, the American Legion Adolph Pfister Post 1038 was chartered in 1931 by 21 veterans and is named after a local U.S. Navy seaman that lost his life in 1919, because of his service during WWI. The Pfister family owned a lumber yard on a siding of the New York Central steam rail line in Valhalla. Many local Veterans knew Seaman Pfister. Our Post home here in Valhalla, was first built in 1951, then enlarged in 1971. The land, almost 2 acres of property, was donated by the Kensico Cemetery in 1947. The road name was changed to Legion Drive, from previously Railroad Avenue, as it went to and from the railroad from Valhalla Park. The Legionnaires built the first section of our Post home by themselves and donation. The addition on the south side, was built during the Vietnam War, as a card room, kitchen and rest rooms upstairs. Downstairs a pool room and utility storage was added. We provide and fund many VA Montrose Hospital PTSD patient events held at our Post 1038 and the main hospital, also monthly direct financial support of the Veterans Food Panty for unemployed veterans at VA Montrose Hospital. We support American Legion Boys State. Additionally, we organize the Valhalla Memorial Day Parade, Veterans Day ceremonies and so much more. We also support and hold the charter for local Valhalla Boy Scout Troop #1 since 1934. We are over 90 Legionnaires, all wartime veterans, strong and growing, with many Vietnam and recent Gulf War, OIF/OEF/OND veterans. Auxiliary Unit 1038 supports our community greatly and a future Sons of the American Legion Squadron 1038 will soon be in place. We welcome all that are eligible to join our American Legion Family!

Parade Grand Marshal, Legionnaire Jack Walsh, was assigned to the attack aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CVA-39) and soon sailed off to war, with an area of responsibility near Korea and Japan. Staying there during the remainder of the Korean War, only returning back to Navy homeport in Florida afterward and some well deserved leave. But Jack wanted even more sea duty! He volunteered for transfer to another Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Hornet (CVA-12)
