In 1917 Lieut. Charles A. Meyer left Newton as the leader of a large contingent for Camp Dix. He was among the early Sussex County contingent to go overseas. Assigned to CO K. 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division sent to the front and had been in the midst of the fighting on the American sector in France.
Lieut. Charles A. Meyer, Jr., at the age of 26, was killed in action on October 6th, during one of the terrible battles, the Battle of the Argonne Forest, part of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

American Legion Post #86, named for Lt. Charles A. Meyer, was organized at the Cochran House in August 1919.

The post was later located on Trinity St. in Newton, now the present location of our Municipal Building.
With the sale of the property to the town of Newton in 1966, we purchased property and constructed our post on its present location 20 Yates Ave. Newton, NJ.
