The year was 1919. World War I was ending. The place was the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) Headquarters in France. A group of twenty officers was asked to suggest ideas on how to improve troop morale in World War I. One officer, Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., proposed an organization of veterans. That was the seed that has grown into a membership of 2.4 million members in 14,000 post around the world. Meanwhile back in Merchantville on August 11, 1919 at THE CLUB a group of 15 veterans met for the purpose of forming a post of the American Legion.
