By 2004, the Post building, an 1895 Life-Saving station, was showing its age and needed extensive and expensive repairs. A decision had to be made whether the members would keep the old building and repair it or sell the property and move into a storefront in the shopping district on 96th Street. The decision was made to keep the property and restore it to as close as possible to its look in the early 1900s. By restoring the building, it was hoped that the post could get several grants to help defray the expenses. Additionally, the decision was made to sell off part of the property in order to raise more funds. Fund raising was conducted, donations were received from the boroughs of Avalon and Stone Harbor, and finally grants were received from various organizations. Restoration started in 2005 with a new roof and continues as an ongoing initiative. This picture, taken in 2008, shows the application of new siding on the building. Renovation and upkeep are a never ending process.
