Short History of American Legion Star Post 127

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 marked the end of The Great War, or as we commonly know it, World War I. American pride and patriotism ran high as our soldiers or as they were called, “Dough Boys”, returned from victory over Germany during the months following the cessation of hostilities. Of the over 2 million men and women who served in the American Expeditionary Force, 99 men returned to the Jamesburg-Monroe-Helmetta area. Additionally 5 men were killed in action, bringing the total men who served to 114.

In early 1919 a group of veterans founded the American Legion. The George Washington Post 1 was the first local post established in Washington, DC, but later moved to temporary headquarters in New York City.
