The following is a transcript of a press release to the Nashua Telegraph by Nashua Senior Center Development Manager, Judy Porter.
For immediate release. July 29 (Nashua NH)
Since the Nashua Senior Activity Center is a resource for seniors in the community, on any given day, the staff never knows what challenge might confront them. One Monday morning, Senior Center Development Manager, Judy Porter arrived at the Center after chatting about all of the Senior Center activities on WSMN radio with George Russell from 7-8am. Although the Center did not open for another hour, there was one elderly woman sitting on the bench at the entrance, crying. Her husband, a World War II vet, had passed away the week before and she needed help arranging his burial with military honors, and she did not know where to go for help. She had no relatives in the area, and had no idea who could help her. She did know, however, that Nashua had a Senior Center.
Porter reached out to every person she could think of for help but was finding this to be a challenge. She sent the senior home with the promise that she would find help and get a proper, respectful, military burial for the deceased veteran. At least a dozen phone calls later, with nothing coming together, Barney Barbera, Commander of the Nashua American Legion Post 3, and member of the Senior Center Board of Directors, returned the call. Commander Barbera said of course the American Legion would assist the widow of a veteran. He swung into action and coordinated everything so that there would be an honor guard, gun salute and service. Members of American Legion Post 3 also escorted the widow to the service and stood by her side during the service.
How fortunate is Nashua to have amazing resources for seniors such as the Nashua Senior Activity Center and Nashua American Legion Post #3!
