Early on the Fourth of July, Nashua residents gathered at Greeley Park for a patriotic sunrise service.
The master of ceremonies was state Rep. David L. Smith, Hillsborough District 22 (Nashua Ward 3). The opening ceremony began with the advancing of the color guard, performed by members of the James E. Coffey Post 3, American Legion and Sons of the American Legion. The flag ceremony was followed by all 3 verses of the national anthem sung by the Community Choir and others in attendance.
The Rev. Richard Kelley of St. Christopher Church offered the invocation. Mayor Bernie Streeter spoke of the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War that followed.
The choir then presented "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Tony Clements, a member of BSA Troop 655, recited the Gettysburg Address.
The keynote speaker, Congressman Charlie Bass, spoke of how we are truly blessed as a nation. He recalled that from the beginning, our forefathers formed our government through divine inspiration and that our role in the world is a part of a greater plan.
A musical presentation, "America the Beautiful" was then performed by the Community Choir. Chaplain Ronald E. Poirier of James E. Coffey Post 3, offered the benediction.
Nearly 300 local residents attended the program.
State Reps. Lori Movsesian and Cindy Rosenwald, both from Nashua Ward 3, were also present. Commander Barry Palmer, James E. Coffey Post 3, American Legion; Commander William String, Nashua Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Commander Byron Buckingham, Chapter 395, Military Order of the Purple Heart, also attended the ceremonies.
After the program, a pancake breakfast was served in the parking lot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, next door to Greeley Park.
