Six members of the James E. Coffey American Legion Post 3 who became 50-year members in 1997 were recently honored at a reception in the post lounge.
   Joining the honorees and their wives and guests were the members of the "Over 50 Years Members Club" of the Coffey Post and their wives and guests.  Many officers of the post and their guests and other legionnaires from Post 3 also attended.
   Post Commander, Costas Bozickas, welcomed those attending and presented the new inductees with framed certificates of continuous membership.
   Post 3 Junior Vice Commander, Peter Lyon, provided music, and the Silver Linings from the Nashua Senior Center provided entertainment.
   Alice Angus and Betty Caron expressed appreciation for the preparation and serving of the buffet, and to Richard and Lena Grohoski and lounge manager Gary Johnson for their help.
   Here is some biographical background on the new inductees:

  • Louis C. Archambault - Served in the Army; worked many years at Aubuchon's Hardware; owner St. Pierre Jewelers; played in the Coffey Post Band while he was in high school when Pop Wilson was director of the band.  Now retired.

  • Peter R. Cote - Served in the Army in WWII; joined the Reserves and was recalled in the Korean War; he retired from St. Joseph Hospital; he is serving his fourth term in the Legislature.

  • Clyde R. Hirst - Served as an M.P. in the Army in Italy and North Africa during WWII. Born in North Adams MA; he worked for Sprague Electric in North Adams and Nashua.  He retired as a foreman after 35 years of service to the company.  He is currently at Greenbriar nursing home.

  • Alfred E. Nadeau - Served 20 years in the Navy in WWII, Korea and Vietnam in submarines and destroyers. He then worked for the Railway Postal Service and the Defense Dept. at Hanscom Field.  He is now retired.

  • John G. Scontsas - Served in the Ski Troops of the Army; trained in Colorado and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and was stationed for 19 months in Headquarters Company of the 25th Infantry Division.  He was discharged in December 1945.

  • George E. Tibbetts - Served in the Navy in WWII; a graduate of Boston University, he was the manager of Tucker Anthony Investments in downtown Nashua, representing the company for 33 years.  He played Legion baseball for Coffey Post 3 in 1941-43 for the legendary coach, Art Ryan.  Now retired, he is living in Colorado.
